target audience and price
As I have shown in my prezi, the target audience for my magazine is mainly focused on teenagers. It is also aimed at both genders as you see both genders listening to R&B which is my genre I have chosen. I have thought about the price that I will have my magazine as and due to the target audience being teenagers I don’t think I will have my magazine too expensive. The reason for this is that half of the teenagers around will not have jobs and will still be in the non-working class, therefore they may not have the right amount of money they need to afford the magazine.

L.I.I.A.R evaluation of my music magazine
2.
L:
Masthead: my masthead is going to be possibly one of the most noticed on my front cover. It must be produced in a big font and done boldly. This is so it is one of the first things that the reader will see when looking at the cover. The name of the masthead will not contain too many letters, so it will be short and snappy, also very catchy. This is so it is a name easy to remember. The masthead must be easily noticeable and produced in a readable font.
Main image: My main image on the products I create will also have to be very noticeable. In order to make it clearly seen it will most probably have to take up the majority of the front cover. The shot I have been told to use and would be best to use on my music magazine is a MCU (medium close up). A MCU is usually a shot from the shoulders upwards. The reason I will be using this shot is so the face(s) of the person/people on the front cover stand out to the readers. I will also make the people on the front cover look directly at the camera. This is so when a member of public is looking at the front cover the person that is on the front cover looking at the camera will automatically catch the eye of the reader and draw them to the main image which is one of the most important features of the front cover.
House style of magazine: On my magazine cover and running through to the contents I will ensure that I keep the house style running throughout. I will do this by:
- Ensuring that the font I deem appropriate to use will be kept the same throughout.
- That the colour/colours I choose to use will be kept the same on the cover and in the contents. I will make sure that the colours that I choose to use will be very bright. This is in order to make the magazine stand out as well as possible and catch the eye of the reader. To catch the eye of the member of public or whoever is reading it will be the main target for me when I am producing music magazines.
The reason I will be doing this will be in order to keep the magazine looking professional.
Other features on the cover and contents:
- Another feature that will appear on my front cover are thumbnail images. Thumbnail images are extremely important on most magazines. This is basically because they do the job of giving hints of what sort of articles and stories that will be published in the magazine. The thumbnail images may go on the front cover or in the contents, I have seen examples where they are in both or one or the other.
- The price of the magazine will be in the top right corner beneath my magazine masthead. This is because as it is on the shelf in a shop the top right corner will be the part of the magazine that will be seen by the public. The price being shown is very important because as my price will be respectable for a good quality magazine people are more likely to pick it up if it is cheaper.
- Due to there being a price to the magazine there will have to be a barcode to be scanned. The barcode will most likely be placed in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine. This is so it is of the way of the main features of the magazine. I will have quite a small barcode so it does not take up a lot of space on the magazine. I don’t want it to take up too much space as it is not one of the most important features on the magazine.
- Another thing that is seen on most popular and successful magazines is a competition to be entered or a prize to be won that is to be won by buying the magazine or it will also be advertised inside. This will make the member of public want to buy the magazine as the it will be a good prize to be won. On my magazine I will most probably place this on the front cover at the very top of the cover above the masthead, this will be a thin strip. I will probably do an advert for a holiday to a tropical resort to be won. This is a great tease device to make a person buy the magazine.
- The main article that is written on the front cover in bold again will definitely relate to the main image. This will be done as the boldness of the writing will match to the size of the image and people that read/buy the magazine will automatically pick up that the two match.
I:
For this production I am producing a magazine for an existing magazine company. I feel there is a space in this magazine company for a music magazine, this is why I will produce one for this topic. I also feel that I will have to live up to the expectations of what has already been produced. It will be pressurised as I have looked into existing magazines in this company and have seen some very classy and professional magazines produced under the categories of sport, food and fashion etc. I feel that to have a music magazine in a magazine company is important. It is a very popular topic within the public and I think that people will be likely to buy a music magazine. In order to make the magazine as successful as some of the ones already made, I will have to do some research into some existing magazines and evaluate which music genre is the most popular. At the minute I think I will aim my magazine at teenagers and do an R&B genre.
I:
I will have my target audience as teenagers, and have the music genre as R&B. The two link together nicely as the R&B genre is really up beat music and the charts at the minute are full of this kind of music. This is good because teenagers are always checking up on the charts and most teenagers listen and admire the music that is in the charts. I think the fact that the music genre I will be doing is R&B will give me the chance to express and send out the message that it is a fun and exciting genre. The way I will send out this message is by using bright and exciting colours on the front cover, this will link back to how fun and exciting the music genre I am using actually is. On the other hand if I was to be doing a music magazine on the genre rock, I would use more dark colours as that is the sort of atmosphere there is when you listen to that type of music.
A:
The target audience I have chosen to aim my magazine at is teenagers. This is to link well with the music genre I will base my magazine on, which will be R&B. My target audience will also be a mixed gender as both boys and girls are up to date and interested in R&B music that is in the charts.
R:
By doing a music magazine based on R&B, I think that this will automatically send out a positive message of my target audience. This is because most people are aware that this type of music is rather up beat and interesting. The features of this music link to a positive message. I also think that having teenagers as the target audience, then producing a magazine on R&B is rather accurate in the teenagers taste of music.

My L.I.I.A.R evaluation of my own work using
Audience feedback!
Taking on all of the feedback I have been given, I have reviewed my work and made a LIIAR evaluation of the three drafts.
L:-
I have kept the house style running through the front cover as I have used the same colour and the same writing font throughout. This is so it looks more professional and also purple is a colour that links well with the chosen college- ‘Wyke’. Also on all 3 of the front covers I have kept the same masthead and on all of them I have kept them big and bold so they stand out and it will be the first thing that the reader sees. I have done the same with the main image. The main image should take up most of the page and should be a middle close up shot, this is because it is what was asked of me to produce. Also, this is so that it is clear who the person is. Also on the drafts where there are medium close up shots are the main image, I have asked the person who is on the front to be looking and making eye contact with the camera. The reason for this is so that it drags the reader to them and grabs the readers attention.
Also on my front cover I will keep the thumbnail images on. This is so the reader knows what will be discussed in the magazine. Unlike on my magazine I will probably have 2 thumbnail images as then this will also encourage more text to be introduced. This would be a good thing as the bad thing for all of the three drafts is the lack of text.
I will try not to alter the way that I have structured it too much as it people said it looked very professional with the positioning of everything.
I:-
Listening to teenagers opinions and their ideas helped me a lot with thinking about what my final product will be like. The ideas they give are very important as it will be very similar to what other teenagers think, this is important because teenagers is the target audience of the college magazine. By listening to the teenagers views on my magazines, I could possibly take the criticism on board and then look to see how I could improve the drafts for when I come to do my magazine.
I:-
One of the positive things that was said about all of the drafts was that they all had bright colour involved on the front covers. The bright colour is done purposely and this is because it will send a positive message out to the public about the college. Another thing that was mentioned in the feedback was that when a front cover had been done with an image of the college in the background, the college was always large and took up the whole of the background. I made sure that I had done this in order make it stand out from the rest of the front cover, doing this, may send out a message that the college stands out above all of the other colleges. It also helped that I had taken nice pictured of the college and taken photos of the appropriate places.
A:-
Getting feedback from my target audience of the magazine really helped me and gave me ideas of how I could improve my magazine for when I create my final product. I will think more about what teenagers are interested in. For example maybe a discount on the front for a fashion shop.
R:- My main intention is to make Wyke college out to be the best college that there is, and I believe that putting on the success of students in certain subjects and the new buildings built will do this for me. This would be a hit to teenagers if they were to think that there had been a big change in Wyke and that it had all been done up.
**feedback on the 2nd draft i posted.
Good points:- Was said to be the best one of the three.
- Good colour schemes throughout the front cover which will easily catch the eye of college students.
- Masthead stands out and people can easily make out what the masthead of the magazine is.
- Boys appearance on the front cover relates to a rugby player as he looks big.
- Shows the boys name on the front cover which will promote him.
Bad things:- havent got anything explaining the picture in the bottom corner.(would have done but posted the wrong picture).
- Same as all the others- not enough text on the front cover.
- Although the boy is meant to be a rugby player, he isnt really smiling, and the caption next to his picture is a very positive thing.

**11. feedback on first published draft!:
The feedback i gained from this magazine was yet again positive and negative.
Good points:- Again, well laid out and structured, so looks professional.
- Very colourful and again the colour purple matches with the them colour of the college.
- The picture shows inside wyke itself, and it is a very pleasent picture of how the college is set out and how it looks. So the selling of the college is good on the front cover.
Bad Points:- Maybe not up to the standard that a college magazine should be, people possibly wouldnt pick it up and read it.
- not very informative. On most college magazines you see quite a bit of text on the front cover, whereas on this one there is very little.
- should maybe include a competition on the front or chances to win ticets to a concert for example.

12. To get my magazine recognized I would probably promote my magazine online. I would have to think about this carefully as I would have to think about what sort of site I would advertise it on. I would probably promote it on a website that teenagers would visit frequently, this is because my target audience is teenagers. A website I could use could be an already existing college website, or even on I tunes or Spotify which are both music sites visited often by teenagers.
A way to encourage people to buy the printed version of the magazine instead of viewing the online version would be possibly to include competitions or vouchers for money off on certain things. For example, a voucher for Topman saying if you spend £20 then you get £5 off. Another deal you could do on a voucher inside the magazine could be something like ‘money off a trip to Alton Towers ’.
Another reason why people would buy the magazine as a print copy and not just read it online is that they might want or require a copy to read and take places, on a journey for example. Whereas on the internet you can only read it from the computer.
I believe that it would be better to sell the college to other teenagers if the magazine was printed and everyone picked up the printed version. This is when word of mouth starts to come in, the magazine may start to get shown around to teenagers about how promising the college looks and more and more people will be interested.
Another reason why a magazine would be better as a print copy is that people are more likely to take notice of it. People just tend to ignore things on the internet whereas they would usually pick up a magazine and have a look.
On the other hand, there are also many benefits of promoting a college magazine via the web. One reason is that everyone has easy access to the internet and if a magazine is put on a popular website then it will be easily seen and viewed. Another positive of using the internet is that it wouldn’t use paper and would be better for the environment.
Feedback:
good points:- lots of colour and followed the them colour of Wyke college which is purple.
- quite well laid out and where everything is, is good.
- stuck to the same font and continued housestyle.
- Bold title and the title stands out.
- The main image stands out and you know straight away what the magazine is about if you're from the college.
- Stating the price on the front cover, that it is free. That will make teenagers more keen to pick it up.
Bad Points:- Not much information on the front cover and a collge magazine should really be informative.
- Maybe wouldnt catch the eye of all teenagers for them to pick up.
- Maybe a bit more modern and more attractive to young people.

animation of my target audience:)
GoAnimate.com: My conversation about magazine by S0014248

Like it? Create your own at GoAnimate.com. It's free and fun!
I: This magazine the same as the last one is very well organized and id professionally publicised.
I: In this magazine all it is attempting to do is put out a positive view on the college, which is what my main aim will be. It does this by saying about successful things that are happening within the college. For example- the fashion show on the front with the boy involved, and the trip to Auschwitz that some of the students were involved on. They are basically sending a message out that this is the college to be at.
R: The representation is basically the same as the last one as the representation of it is very creative with the running house style with the colours. This again looks very professional.
I: The magazine is very well organized in which it looks very professional. I think the ideas that the producers have come up with and the colours etc are very clever as they make it look professional.
I: I don’t believe the magazine sends out any ideas or beliefs but I do think that it is attempting to make a good impression of the college.
R: The brilliant representation of this magazine makes it what it is. I think the contents maybe have a little too much text on but the front cover is good. With the correct sized image to still grab the attention of the reader.
This is one example of a college magazine that has been made and its contents.
L: The magazine is laid out very well. There are a mix of colours but mainly white, blue and a bit of grey. I think the colours all mix together effectively. The image is the main focus on the cover and it grabs attention of the reader, I think using a MCU will work better that the image shown though. I think by looking at the cover and the contents you can tell that this is a magazine for people at college.
I: The magazine doesn’t really have any organization or anything about it. For example it does not have any tv or radio shows organized.
I: This magazine does not show any ideology (ideas beliefs that I can spot on the front cover or in the contents therefore am not able to analyse the area.
R: I think that the representation of it is very important as it makes it look professional. With the image on the cover giving it an urban feel, therefore you get the feeling it is aimed at teenagers anyway. I think bright colours are used effectively to add life to it.

Task 6.
6. I had to be very careful when picking the price of my magazine. This is because I researched many college/ school magazines and some were free and some had prices on them. But whatever they were they either had a price on them or just ‘free’ written on the cover and this is what I will have to remember to do. What I also have to take into account is what I said above, and how most of the students at Wyke College will fall into the D and E groups of the demographics. This will mean they will most likely to be short on funds and will have other things to think about purchasing. The main question you need to ask is, ‘will they be able to afford the magazine?’. I have based my ideas of having my price as free around this and I think this will be the best option as more students will pick it up and read it, therefore, view the success of the college and be aware of the updates.
Task 5.
5. My target audience is going to be for all of the students at Wyke College , mainly teenagers. This means I have to think about this logically and base my presentation, ideas, beliefs, colour schemes etc on how it will appeal to my target audience. I have to think also about the demographic groups that these students fall into as most of them will be un employed and in E of the demographic groups, they will not be able to afford this magazine as they will be short on money. Maybe a few will fall into D but many will not want to fork out money for a college magazine. Also the other demographic groups are age and the magazine will fall into the 15-24 category and also the mixed gender demographic group. Taking in all of these to consideration I will have to come up with at the end an appropriate magazine that suits all of these.
Task 3.
3. I have chosen to use Wyke College as my college and area to focus on in my magazine. One of the reasons I have chosen to use Wyke is because it is easily accessed my media students and would be easy to take pictures of the college as it is where we are located. Wyke college is the most suitable for this task, it is a friendly and welcoming college which is very well presented. I didn’t just pick this college because it was closest and the easiest option, but because it was the best option within the local area. I had to pick a successful college to present and Wyke College offered everything needed for the preliminary task.
task 2.
LIIAR evaluation of front cover:
2.
L: My front cover that I am going to be making is from a school/ college magazine. My front cover will have a running house style. This is crucial in any magazine because it keeps it all looking professional and keeps the same sort of theme. I will keep my house style colour running from the front cover through to the contents. Also on my front cover I will have the masthead at the top, I will make this easy to read and clear to see as I want it to be the first thing that the reader or member of public will see when they pick up the magazine. The masthead needs to stand out but not take up too much of the front page. Preferably the masthead needs to be the same font as all the other text on the front cover and on the contents this is also to keep the same house style running through the front cover and the contents so it is consistent. Nobody wants to see a boring and dull front cover on the magazine, so I will make sure that my colours chosen are not boring to look at and pick 2 or 3 colours that actually blend together quite well.
On the front of my magazine I will have a main image in the centre of the cover which is a MCU (medium close up). I will have my person on the front cover looking directly straight forward as then they will grab the attention of the reader of the college magazine. Also I wouldn’t want to have a boring magazine colour scheme so I will make sure that i use brighter colours to make it stand out but whilst using bright colours, still make sure I am using a running house style from the front cover to the contents. On my front cover I will also add a few thumbnail images. This is so the reader will automatically have some idea of what will be involved in the magazine.
The price of the magazine will be free. This is because it is a school / college magazine and people don’t usually tend to pay for them. I will still state on the magazine what the price is, this is as it may cause confusion with no price. The price which will read ‘free’ will be laid out at the top right hand corner just below the masthead. The barcode is also very important on a magazine, this is because you need to scan an item before it is sold. Although this magazine is free, I will still have a barcode on mine to keep it looking professional.
Usually on magazines you see a competition or an advert for a competition to be entered. I think I will have a small strip at the bottom or to the right of my front cover to state that something could be won or you have the chance to win something within the school/ college. Another thing that you usually see on magazines are that the main article and short part of writing are related to the main image, I will attempt to do this as it makes it more professional.
I: The magazine I will be making is for an existing publisher who’s other publications are very similar to the planning of mine and the magazine I had in mind. I don’t think this should make me worried. If anything I think it would encourage me to live up to the expectations of the other magazines. I could use some of their ideas that they have used as some of the others were also aimed at people at college. These other publications that have been made are all successful. I believe in order to make a college magazine successful is to think about your target audience and what sort of things they are interested in. I could possibly use sneaky ideas to make them read the magazines that haven’t been used before, these ideas such as having the competition and having the main prize as 4 free tickets to an immense college party that shouldn’t be missed out on.
I: I have planned my magazine so that it sends out a positive look on the college. The college that I am using is Wyke College , which is my own college. I am using it because It is practical for me, a great environment for taking pictures, also its local and easy to get pictures. The way in which I will make the college look good on the magazine front cover is will have positive stories on the front cover and the contents. For example pick up on students excelling in certain things, for example, football or in the music industry. You could also say about the excellent grades that have been achieved over the summer and also the excellent facilities that are available. An important thing I could say is that there is a new principal at the college and have a thumbnail picture of him on the front cover. This would be good to use as I could say that he will be giving a speech on what he thinks of the college and how the friendly staff have welcomed him in.
Basically I will be attempting to get the message out that Wyke College is one of the greatest colleges around and sending out a clear picture of how good it actually is.
A: My target audience is very specifically aimed at people at college within the age range of 16 upwards to around 20. Taking into account that some people at college will have sat back years so you have to think about things like this when producing your magazine. Thinking about my target audience, I will try and make the magazine as mature and as professional as possible as they are not at primary school anymore.
R: As I have already mentioned I will make the students at the college all positive and send out the message that Wyke College is a succeeding college. This is so when people are reading the magazine they look at Wyke highly. My main intention is to make Wyke out to be the best college around.

The brief- prelimary exercise.
Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
